Some Morning Drama
I woke up super early this morning, very uncharacteristically if I am not woken by A.
Because it was cooler outside than in, I took a book out and sat in the shade reading.
I kept getting distracted by birds that were obviously bothered by something. A squirrel came by and they were nearly dive-bombing it, which seemed strange to me. As it made its way across the top of our fence, about 7 robins flew at it to make it go away.
I figured there was a nest in a nearby tree, and they were trying to keep intruders away.
A little while later, A. came out with me, and I showed him all the robins around. Behind us, one robin stayed on the fence and started making strange sounds… with its beak on the fence or its throat, I’m not sure. It stayed there making warning sounds, but I still couldn’t quite figure out why.
Fast forward about two hours, and B. comes up from talking to Dave in the basement, and tells me there’s a baby robin stuck in the window well.
Now all the strange bird behavior makes sense!
Needless to say, we had to save the bird.
Mama (or Daddy?) was a little nervous seeing the activity in the basement, or afraid to jump down into the window well, but had a mouthful of food for the baby.
Then Dave stepped in, with B. nearby; S. and A. were in the basement with me to get a better view (and so as not to frighten all the birds away).
He tried not getting into the window well at first, but the bird eluded him.
Going up?
From this point on I couldn’t get good photos of the bird. It flew off into some nearby bushes. Dave kept watch over it and noticed it couldn’t get up onto the fence (we think it was too tired from trying to fly out of the window well), so got the box again and lifted it to the fence.
That time it gladly hopped on! Then it flew over to a tree in our yard.
Hopefully it gets fed well and gets its energy back and can fly home with its family.
