Pre-empted By Obama, Worked Out Perfectly

This family was scheduled to have their photo session at The Oval at CSU, but Barack Obama decided to have a rally at the exact time and place, so we rescheduled.

The next Sunday as I arrived, I thought about how much better the weather was for us! It was beautiful and warm enough that we didn’t have to wear jackets, or that small children would get too chilled and done with the session early.

And I was really glad that there was still some color left in the trees.

Swartzendruber Family Fall 2008

Because I know this mama, Tara - a friend of many years now (my dd enjoys knowing that their oldest, R., is her “oldest friend” :P ) - is patiently waiting for these photos, I’m going to cut the talk and share lots of pictures.

Their focus was on family pictures, though I got lots of individuals for me. :)

Isn’t this a gorgeous family?!!!

At the end of the session, Tara felt that there was no way we got anything “good” from the session.

What do you think? :D

Family sessions go like that… I’m frantically going about trying to get everybody to look at the camera. Often, it even amazes me that we’ve got the shot. And I’m very glad for Photoshop. ;)

I’ve wanted to get Tara and Ruby in front of my camera for years - even before becoming a photographer - so I’m glad to think that I did them justice. :) Thanks, Keri!

STUNNING, to say the least. This is a family of lookers! Barb, your photographic expertise and artistry is so impressive. I can’t wait until we have another need for pro photos :) And Tara, I love the girls’ sweaters! Did you make them?

Kim, I’m not sure Tara will see your question, so I’ll let you know that she did make them. :D

    Barb,

I’ve been an admirer of your work for several months now. These last couple family sessions in the fall have been a real inspiration to me! I love the catch light in the eyes on these. How do you position your clients to get that? They’re gorgeous!

    Thanks so much, Marchet!

I try to position my clients in a location where there is no direct or dappled light on them, but where there’s open sky behind me. If you position yourself a little above them, they are looking up at you (therefore making their eyes wider, which looks nicer) and getting those wonderful catch lights! Unfortunately younger children don’t want to sit still while you look for the best place/position, so it helps to find it on somebody who is more patient before getting your littlest clients into place. :)

    I hope that helps!

btw, I took a quick look at your latest post and you’ve got some wonderful shots there! I love the third one down with the branch of red leaves and all the green tree bokeh behind it. :D

Thanks Barb! You are always so helpful. I think I also might need to get a reflector to help with the catch lights since it’s hard to find a spot with open sky behind me here in Georgia. Trees grow like weeds here! All my best. Glad you liked my autumn leaves pictures.

A reflector could be helpful, Marchet. We were on campus with huge trees all around us, and still found open sky. How I’d love to be in a place where the trees grow like weeds, though!
