Capturing Parenting Ideals In Photos
I’ve been a leader for Attachment Parenting International for many years (although a little reluctant for the last few
), having started the first API chapter in Colorado! Attachment parenting is a passion of mine.
It’s the ideals of attachment parenting - the Eight Principles - that I really want to focus on capturing for your family. As you can see by reading the list below, you don’t have to practice AP in order for you to get some wonderful family photos.
The Eight Principles of Attachment Parenting
- Prepare for Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting
- Feed with Love and Respect
- Respond with Sensitivity
- Use Nurturing Touch
- Engage in Nighttime Parenting
- Provide Consistent and Loving Care
- Practice Positive Discipline
- Strive for Balance in Personal and Family Life
Obviously, it’s possible to capture several of the ideals in one photograph. For example, a nursing photo would convey the ideals of feeding with love as well as nurturing touch and providing loving care.
I probably won’t be taking photographs of you practicing positive discipline or engaging in nighttime parenting (I have my own nighttime parenting to do), but you never know.
Can you believe my 2 year old was just acting?!! I wasn’t *really* disciplining him.
If you’re interested in such photographs, however, let me know! I’m sure the opportunity to discipline positively will occasionally arise during a photo session; instead of pausing the session, I can snap photos.
We can also stage nighttime parenting photos - during the day, of course - for those who want to attempt this. Maybe during naptime?
Let me know what you’re interested in, what you want to remember when your kids are in high school or college… or have kids of their own, and I’ll work hard to capture those memories on film (er, on card? what do you call it with a digital camera?
).
I believe that by focusing on these ideals, mostly what you’ll see in your photos is love. Isn’t that what we basically want in our treasured family photos?!
